History of Door Systems, Inc.’s Garage Door Service Kansas City

Door Systems, Inc. was founded in 1970 by Gale and Ron Rockwell as Raynor Door of Kansas City located at 7 HWY and R.D. Mize in Blue Springs. Two years later it relocated to Lee’s Summit and our current door showroom and warehouse at 507 S. Lea Drive was established in 1973. Our current owners, Pat and Jim Payne, moved to Lee’s Summit from Indiana in 1984 to begin working for the Rockwell’s. Before moving to Lee’s Summit, Jim Payne had worked in the garage door service and entry door installation business since 1974, bringing valuable knowledge and experience to his new employer. A year after Jim joined the Rockwell’s, the name of the company was changed to Door Systems, Inc. In 1992, the Rockwell’s sold Door Systems, Inc. to the Payne’s with Pat as the president, their son John as the vice president, and Jim as the general manager. When you call Door Systems, Inc. today, chances are you will be speaking with Jim!

The Door Systems, Inc. Difference

Jim Payne likes to say the smallest entry doors they have worked on were pet doors at the bottom of a garage door; this just goes to show that no project is too small for Door Systems, Inc.! The largest doors they have worked on were commercial garage doors at the Lee’s Summit Airport. Door Systems, Inc. ultimately rebuilt all the airplane hangar doors on the hangers at the airport! Door Systems, Inc. is ready to jump into any door installation project, from small to large.

John Payne, vice president of Door Systems, Inc. has attended several training schools to learn about high speed doors from garage door install and repair to garage door opener troubleshooting while learning on the job since the 1990s. All technicians attend hands-on seminars on a regular basis as well as in-field training with John. One of Door Systems, Inc.’s technicians, Dustin Wilson, became a certified Commercial Sectional Door Technician through the rigorous program provided by the International Door Association (IDA). This program promotes safety, product quality, and facility security among door and access systems technicians. Dustin had to pass a comprehensive written exam after much study and Door Systems, Inc. is extremely proud of him for earning this certification!

In addition to the education and wide expanse of skills provided by the technicians at Door Systems, Inc., we are also proud to be members of the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce and look for opportunities to get involved and help the Lee’s Summit community where we have been since 1973. Door Systems, Inc. carries an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has received the Angie’s List Super Service award in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Advice From Door Systems, Inc. – A Garage Door Company in Kansas City

The best advice we can give at Door Systems, Inc. is to respect your doors. Garage doors are the largest moving object in the house. Because of this, garage door parts are heavy duty but will experience wear and tear over the years which inevitably causes safety issues. Minor garage door repairs can be done by homeowners, but garage door spring repair and service for the cables and electronics needs to be done by a professional. We have heard (and received photos!) of many horror stories from do-it-yourselfers who found themselves in over their heads and received some pretty bad injuries while trying to save a couple bucks on repairs. Some of the standard scheduled garage door maintenance includes:

  • Steel garage doors inspected once per year.
  • Wood garage doors inspected twice per year.
  • Garage door operators safety tested once per year.

The best time to get these garage door service appointments on the books is during the summer months. Winter weather makes garage door openers work harder and breaks during the winter can leave your home pretty drafty! Door Systems, Inc. gets booked up in the winter with these emergency repairs so you want to be sure your garage system is functioning properly during the warm weather months!

Our sales professionals look forward to meeting on the weekends and before or after work to walk you through our showroom of new garage doors, entry doors, and windows. Call us today!
